Class Participation: Social Media Activity

Posted by admin on Oct 1, 2009 in assignment

In this assignment, you will create an account on Academia.com. (You may create a sockpuppet account). The goal of this assignment is for you to apply your new understanding of these systems appropriately to each genre in terms of form, style, and content such that you can be a better researcher, teacher, and participant.

Helpful hints:

  • Academia.com is the LinkedIN of academia. Next time, we will work on LinkedIN accounts to see how industry handles these sites.
  • Look at my account as an example.
  • Academia.com does an excellent job at (legally) gaming Google. Search for my name, and note how close to the top the result is for my academia page?
  • Therefore, add your content responsibly, because it will be easily found.
  • Do not share any content that you do not want publicly available. This includes any personal contact information.
  • List yourself (or your sock puppet) in our department.
  • Add research interests and keywords. This is how other researchers can find you (and you can find them).
  • Add an about section. Add contact details (email, webpage) only if you want to do so.

After your assignment is completed, create a blog post reflecting on the experience and analyzing the site.  Reflect on Academia’s

  • Purpose: What was the goal/intent of the environment?  Did it live up to expectations?
  • Product: Was the product effective/appropriate for the intended goal?
  • Process: Was the means of production effective? What should be improved?

Welcome

Posted by admin on Jul 30, 2009 in info

You have found the course website for @PW: Social Media Theory (ENG 7/883). Welcome to class! All course information will be posted here. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the course documents (Syllabus, Schedule, Projects & Readings) before the first day of class.

Before the semester begins, I wanted to pass along these details so you are ready to go on the first day of class. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. I will post updates as the semester progresses (updates will be noted on Twitter).

You are expected to maintain and post your reading reports to your blog. You can modify or change the templates, add related academic content, etc. You should have received an email with your access information – if not, please email me immediately so we can get you set up. Once you are ready to go, email me the URL for your site so I can add it to our class website. As you see them added, please add your classmates to your blogroll.

  • Learn about Wordpress
  • Learn how to write your first post (tell us about yourself!)
  • Need more? Watch an incredibly long, in-depth tutorial.

We will be using Twitter to communicate with our class. To participate, you will need to install Twitter and use the #PWSM hashtag to communicate with us.

Note that must add your classmates as friends to receive direct messages from them. If you add me as a friend, you will quickly learn how helpful groups can be – especially when I’m tweeting sports games, talking to other academics, or helping distribute information during a disaster.

I highly recommend that you install some sort of tool to help you organize these tweets, as following along from Twitter’s website can become incredibly messy. Tweetdeck helps Twitter find community, something we’ll talk a bit about during this class.

  • Organize with Tweetdeck
  • In Tweetdeck, create a group for our class and a group for our hashtag so you can follow them easier.
  • There are many tutorials on YouTube for Tweetdeck. Take a look!

My office hours are virtual through instant messenger and Skype. If I am online, feel free to contact me. Note that I may not be at my desk, even if it does list me as Available. I also may be available if listed Away. Life is fun like that. If you wish to schedule a longer meeting (15+ minutes), please arrange a time with me to either meet online or in my BAL 5020 office or the CeME lab.

  • Video Chat with Skype
  • Text chat with AIM

After you have accounts on Twitter, Skype, and AIM, please email me your account names. I will publish your Twitter names on our class page so that we can communicate across the SDI. Note that this page is public – as is Twitter – so you may want to create a pseudonym (sock puppet) for this semester (or not – YMMV).

Now, if you’d like to start seeing what’s buzzing in social media, I highly recommend turning on TwitScoop in Tweetdeck (or visit it here and watch as the cloud tag updates in real time).
